In the East, writing is revered as a gift from the gods, representing not only mystical revelation, but also seen as a tool for enlightenment. The transformative experience of contemplative Buddhist calligraphy is visible in the intensity and simplicity of inspired strokes of brush and ink. Inherent in the expression of these divine alphabetical characters is the flowing of the brushwork from a clear mind and a calm heart rather than solely from artistic ability.
7" x 9".  128 pages.

Silk is one of the oldest fabrics known to man, its discovery as a weavable fibre dating back as early as the mid-third century BC in China. Europe was exposed to the incomparable delicacy of silk — soft, sensuous and shimmering in its opulence — via the "Silk Road" which created an insatiable demand. In order to counteract the harmful currency drain resulting from the import of silk, in 1466 Louis XI chose Lyon as the site for a silk industry, which flourished for over three centuries. Revolutionized with the invention of the silk loom in 1804, the weaving of complex designs was made possible.
Exactingly printed to recreate the luminosity and look of classic era silk, our journals in shades of olive green and alluring blue are dedicated to the beautiful fabrics of the Jacquard loom silk-weaving tradition.
These unique books have a subtly weighted magnetic strap for secure closing, satin ribbon place markers and a convenient memento pouch.
4" x 5.5".  160 pages.

PB-7113 (Was 7112) Flaming Gold Slim Size $12.95
Gold leaf blocking on leather and parchment had been practiced in Europe since the early 16th century. From 1698 onwards this technique was applied to paper. What became known as brocaded paper was produced in a relief printing process – a design cut in relief from a sheet of copper or brass at least 6 mm thick, using a number of different metalworking tools. The repertoire of shapes used to decorate brocaded paper, among them ribbons, tendrils, arabesques and floral blossoms, closely echo the patterns adorning the leather wall coverings and silk damask of the time. Towards the end of the 18th and in the 19th century the predominant motifs chosen were leaves with figurative patterns, laid out like a picture sheet. Our journal cover designs are based on some beautiful examples of this sumptuous variety of coloured paper housed in museums in Augsburg, Nuremberg and Fürth in Germany.
